How to save money on household products: 12 practical tips
Updated 17 October 2026
Most people overpay for household products not because they choose the wrong item, but because they buy at the wrong time or compare against the wrong price. These habits will help you spend less on the things you buy every few years: appliances, electronics, furniture and toys.
1. Know the list price, then ignore it
The manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) is a starting point, not a fair price. Popular products often sell 15–30% below list within a few months of launch. Every product page on Savings Ahead shows the list price next to a typical sale price, so you can see how big a “discount” really is before you get excited about one.
2. Buy at the right time of year
- Late November (Black Friday and Cyber Monday): small kitchen appliances, vacuums, smart speakers, TVs and toys.
- July: big online sales events cut prices on electronics and home brands.
- January: fitness equipment and bedding (“white sales”).
- Late summer and early autumn: grills, patio furniture, pools and garden tools are cleared to make space.
- After the holidays: leftover seasonal decorations are often 50–75% off.
3. Consider last year’s model
When a new version launches, the previous one usually drops in price even though the differences are small. A robot vacuum, fitness tracker or stand mixer from one generation back often does 95% of the job for much less. Our popular-by-year pages make it easy to see what each generation offered.
4. Compare the cost per use, not the sticker price
A $35 blender that breaks in a year costs more than a $90 one that lasts eight. For things you use daily, such as a coffee maker, cookware or a vacuum, check the warranty length and whether replacement parts are sold separately.
5. Check the warranty before buying an extended one
Many brands already include a one-to-seven-year warranty, and some credit cards extend manufacturer warranties automatically. Extended warranties sold at checkout are rarely worth it for products under a few hundred dollars.
6. Look at certified refurbished
Manufacturer-refurbished vacuums, kitchen appliances and electronics are inspected, often come with a full warranty and can cost 20–40% less than new.
7. Compare unit prices on consumables
For coffee pods, detergent, batteries and filters, compare the price per pod, load or unit rather than per pack. Bigger is usually cheaper per unit, but not always, especially during promotions on smaller sizes.
8. Use price matching
Many large retailers will match a lower price from a competitor, and some will refund the difference if the price drops shortly after you buy. Keep receipts and check the store’s policy.
9. Avoid paying for features you won’t use
An air fryer with twelve presets cooks the same chips as one with four. Before you buy, list the two or three things you actually need the product to do, and compare models on those.
10. Bundle carefully
Bundles such as a games console with extra controllers or a drill with batteries can be good value, but only if you want every item. Add up the individual prices of the parts you would actually use.
11. Set price alerts and wait
For anything that isn’t urgent, add it to a wish list or set a price alert and wait a few weeks. Prices on popular household products move often, and patience is the simplest discount there is.
12. Sell or donate what you replace
Old appliances, toys and tools in working order still have value. Selling them locally lowers the real cost of the upgrade; donating keeps them out of landfill.
